Players are most comfortable in a 442, so if your team hadn't been together that long it wouldn't make sense to me to start tinkering, particularly in a QF. I've played 352, 442, 451 and 433 this season but we've been together a few years and everyone knows their jobs. I still chat to Marlon regularly but he's so busy with his business and Northern Ireland U21's that there's very little chance of getting him back in goal. The lad who scored in our cup final scored the opening goal for us against you. Woodfords centre forward was their best player, big tall lad but I couldn't tell you his name, they were actually 1-0 up against after 20 minutes.

Nobody at all turned up for training?? That's a bit harsh, I can imagine it was a disappointing defeat but thought your team had a bit about them in terms of spirit. Also, you're well organised so I thought the players would appreciate that. Why the disillusionment, is it something deeper?

Our Division One is small but strong, ourselves and ScottoRaes Aberdeen have a healthy rivalry and one or two others are capable of giving us a tough game. Division Two is pretty crap though but enjoyable for those that play in it, unfortunately, promotion from Division Two is usually a bit of a poisoned chalice.

I used to go and watch our opposition play until my Son turned up on the scene, as soon as he's old enough though I'll get him ground hopping! The only reason I found this site is because I was scouting Woodford Wanderers and stumbled across it. It's been a great help to be fair, you guys know your stuff

I saw three short clips of Sevenacre & Sidcup but they're only 20 seconds long and didn't tell me anything really. I'm expecting their Saturday team! No doubt they'll be reading this, that's why I made most of the stuff up about MSS just to mislead them.Tongue

It's a combination of things, and there will undoubtedly be other Sunday teams in the same boat who will have experienced this as well.

Firstly, it's because a lot of our players don't yet socialise with each other because they have only just joined us...and from completely different sources instead of all from the same team/college/workplace or whatever. They also don't live anywhere near each other, so we don't all go down the same pub like other Sunday clubs do. Like a lot of other Sunday clubs nowadays, cultural differences amongst our players rule us out meeting in pubs anyway.
We don't have a clubhouse at our Home ground, so we don't drink after matches, and it's almost impossible to arrange club social events because a lot of our players can't afford it, they don't drive, and they work all sorts of different hours, including evenings/nights.
It's very much a case of just turning up to training and matches and getting to know each other there.

The team spirit is quite good, certainly compared to other clubs, but where we have a problem is that some of our players have never played in competitive 11-a-side football before, so when somebody has a go at them on the pitch (as happened in our 8-1 defeat), they take it to heart and then 'leave'...and that is what appears to have happened with one or two. We all know that whatever level of competitive 11-a-side football you are playing at, if your team are losing, then there will be arguments going on. It happens, but then it is forgotten about for the next match.

The other thing that has always affected us year after year whenever we suffer a bad defeat that ends our season in terms of winning trophies is that in our League we have to provide a Club Linesman for every game, which of course is always one of the substitutes. If we are still in contention to win something, players will turn up, go sub and run the line. If we have nothing to play for, players will only turn up if they are going to be in the starting line-up. As simple as that, and there is nothing we can do about it. Getting 'somebody's Dad' to run the line for every match is impossible. They don't want the abuse.

We did actually have five players turn up to training last week. We just took a few pot-shots at our keeper so he could actually warm his hands...which he didn't do against you because he didn't save anything...then we just stood around chatting for 90 minutes. That is probably what our training sessions will be like for the rest of the season.

We are actually still in our League Senior Cup where we will be playing Enfield Rangers in the Quarter-Final. Enfield Rangers are one of the three best teams in our League and regular FA National Sunday Cup entrants. They are packed full of Step 3-7 players and we know we have got no chance of winning that match, particularly with our Captain going away for the weekend. The last time he missed a Cup Quarter-Final, we lost 8-1 of course ! Unsure
If we lose by a lesser margin than 8-1 though, maybe MSS can say they are up there with the best ? Wink

Really interesting thread here.

Best of luck to Boro anyway in the next round, hopefully it tires you out for the end of season run in....

(Off to delete anything incriminating on line in case Lisbon adds to his dossier on us! ha ha)

Yeah, I can see that would be a problem. We don't have that because despite our lads living all over London, we're united by the fact we're from the same area and support the same crap football team. We go to games together and socialise together, in fact we were all in the pub before and after watching Boro get hammered by Crystal Palace the day before our Quarter final! Man management is massive in Sunday football, I've managed to foster a team where everyone takes on responsibility and has ownership of it's success, I don't have to do any ringing around, players get in touch with me. I'm not sure I'd bother if I had to ring around every weekend to get players.

Good luck against Enfield Rangers, play 451 and hit them on the counter attack!Wink

Thanks Scott, at this rate, I don't think we'll be able to fit our league fixtures in so you'll probably win the league by default anyway! I asked Rangers to play a double header this weekend and they refused on the grounds that they didn't have enough players. I don't bother scouting you lot cos I know what you're about, I could watch every game but you'd still pull a few top players out the woodwork on the day.Angelic Besides, you can over analyse and shoot yourselves in the foot by trying to be too clever, there comes a time when you have to trust your players to make the opposition work and not spend all your time worrying about the oppositions strengths, it's the balance before knowledge becomes counterproductive. I worked in research and development for 10 years and did a lot of statistical analysis so it's bred in to me to analyse everything and try and improve it unfortunately, it drives the missus nuts!Pirate

Both semis look like cracking ties. Inter Trac must fancy their chances? Traveling to play away makes a big difference in these county cup games. Inter Trac don't have far to travel when they play Guzelyurt (who are also based in north London). Lisbonlegend, how will your squad prepare for/handle the long journey to Kent?

Hi Steve we're cautiously confident... We've had a report on Guzelyurt from the Burnt Oak Builders manager and they said they had 3 or 4 players who weren't there when they scouted them in a league match, proving they probably bring better players in for their London Cup matches. We're also missing our 2 central midfielders this weekend who are away Skiing, although we do have decent replacements hopefully we can deliver a strong performance.

The journey isn't too far Guzelyurt play at Havkney Marshes which is East London.

The journey isn't too bad to be fair (other than for myself which will probably be a 3 hour round trip!), unlike most teams in Sunday leagues who play for local teams, our players travel a reasonable distance anyway most matches to play for Middlesbrough. We've just booked a couple of mini buses from London Bridge to get us there in good time. We have however lost one of our centre forwards through injury so looks like I might get my 3rd start in a row. I hope the weather doesn't affect the game, it will ruin our season if it does as we will never fit all our league games in.

Sevenacre & Sidcup 2-1 Boro

Fortune conspired against us really. We had a full squad the first 2 times the match was postponed but this weekend we were without our captain, our winger Gutcher who you gave MotM in the QF and our top scorer who fell ill on the morning of the match. The last one was the killer as I ended up having to change formation due to it and we didn't get going, the match was a scrappy affair but it was an awful refereeing decision that cost us as he gave them a penalty when the lad fell in the box. In truth though, we probably deserved to be 1-0 down on the balance of play at half time cos we were shaky at the back and lacked cutting edge up front.

Our centre back then made two mistakes, giving a corner away and then failing to challenge allowing a free header a few minutes in to the second half. They then sat in and tried to counter as we tried to push forward and we grabbed a goal back on 60minutes, a free kick was flicked on and bundled home at the far post. I then had a 20 yarder tipped over, we hit the bar from a free kick, they hit the post from another defensive mistake from us.

If we'd have had our missing players in I've no doubt we'd have won but they deserved iron the day as we gave away poor goals, didn't get to grips with our formation to cause them problems. A disappointing way to go out after such a good run but that's just the way things happen some times, you can't legislate for a sickness and diarrhoea big to your main striker on the morning of the match. Sevenacre & Sidcup were a decent side, they were organised, fit, determined and well drilled. The referee was appalling, which was really disappointing in such an important match, he must have been selected on proximity rather than ability.

Well it is very disappointing to lose a semi final and I have lost in the semi in this very competition myself and it 'messed' us up for the remainder of that season (not saying that will happen to you!) sounds like a lot of different things went wrong for you on the day and as you know sometimes that happens and you just get the feeling it will not be your day. My side came back again the following year and got to the quarters so ther's always another shout for you. If its any consolation I don't believe that you would have won the final as much as I don't think seven acre will beat Guzelyurt either.

Well we'll never know whether Guzelyurt would have beaten us which is disappointing. I'd be surprised if they didn't win it, Sevenacre were a decent side but I don't think they're strong enough to win it, though funnier things have happened. Thankfully, we've another semi final on Sunday to try and put things right and put us back on track, hopefully without any of my players falling ill on the day. Not a bad first run in the competition, we can take a lot of confidence from reaching the semis.

Commiserations, Lisbonlegend. It's certainly unusual for a side who have knocked us out not to go on and reach the Final. We are usually a good omen for other teams !

Are you going in the Sunday Junior Cup next season ?
We certainly will be. We have lost loads of players since you beat us 8-1 and it's interesting to see that Darney knows what that is like.
In Sunday football, it's often difficult to lift players' heads up again after Cup defeats when they are not getting paid to play. Unsure

Seems like you were more prophetic than you may have first thought Hughesy as Middlesbrough Supporters team lost their other semi final as well as the London Junior Cup one they lost and have since lost in their league game so goes to prove that a big loss like a London Junior Cup semi one can set you back a bit in remaining games off the season as I have experienced.
