I was told by a member of staff that leaving barriers shut and unattended is a disciplinary offence, if you go to the loo or whatever you get somebody else to cover or leave them open, there could be an emergency where the station has to be evacuated.

It would be very rare to find barriers still in use after about 7pm at any Kent station, of course after 7pm is when vandalism and anti social behaviour is most likely to happen but that doesn't seem to matter.

You are indeed correct on all points!

As I have a Staff Travel Pass I never have a ticket, which has led me to miss trains whilst queuing at the gates (most recently due to a late bus connection in Reading where I would definitely have made the train had there been no gates) and in one case I actually had to jump them because the person manning them had wandered off somewhere and couldn't be found! Passengers with Rover Tickets, Seasons, web tickets, and luggage all suffer this on a regular basis too.

Have also encountered this problem.
As the barriers have to be manned when they are working anyway I can't see the point of having them as many passengers have to show their ticket to someone for the aforementioned reasons, so why not just have someone checking tickets! Crazy

I travelled through Ilford last weekend and only two of the four lines were open with inevitable delays.

Bloody Pikeys......

This is now the normal service at weekends.
Although on Saturday they went one better and ended up with no trains at all for most of the evening Mad

This is an entirely reasonable point which would mean they are only of benefit at busy stations, in other words, where it would be quicker to put a ticket in a gate machine than show it to a member of staff unless they had hordes of staff on. The security issue is therefore a bit of a red herring and the expenditure on them even more ridiculous. Probably dreamt up by someone in the DFT or the Home office who never travels outside the London Commuter belt.

It makes sense at busy stations where there are so many passengers passing through that it would be impossible to check tickets manually but at most stations ticket barriers are just a nuisance and no real benefit to anybody.

Great tweet!. Can't find the original so I guess GTR have taken the hint!

Having happily retired from the rail industry nearly 4 years ago after almost 22 years of service, it seems lessons are never learnt.

The new timetable is brought in a week before a bank holiday where longer term engineering work is planned, so even greater disruption is likely. Could have commenced it on Tuesday this week, with it being half term and therefore less school traffic and less commuters as they take a holiday with the kids.

When SWT was handed over by Stagecoach to First to become SWR it occurred during the major engineering work at Waterloo with a third of the platforms out of use, hardly an ideal time. No sign of any improvement under first, no surprise to most!

Re: [nico] Worst train company [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Midland line services have been redrafted because of, so we are told, the changes to the Thameslink services yet the new TL timetable that I downloaded a few days ago has the same pattern as before. The much-vaunted TL improvements are the linking of Great Northern services and the introduction of longer trains.

The EML changes appear to be entirely of that company's own making, although the now truncated electrification scheme has influenced them. Our departures from Wellingborough to London have been changed from 30-minute intervals to 40 and 20 on weekdays and 50 and 10 on Saturdays. There are no weekday rush hour services to or from Bedford. These have been replaced by buses – what was previously a 13-minute journey now takes 50 out in the morning, 40 return in the afternoon. Yes, rail replacement buses are now part of the regular service.

Very poor stuff indeed, and I suspect that the winter timetable will see another big revision.

EMT have had no say in the time changes due to rail sharing at peak times with the 04:45 from Leicester the only service that stops at Bedford until mid-morning. Things will get worse for Northants passengers with the completion of electrification from Corby with commuters sitting on what are being described as 'ironing board seats' on 70 mile journeys. I hope Stagecoach continue running the line but something needs to be done with fares as i can do Nuneaton to Euston for under £20 return on a Saturday with VT.

I used to commute on South West trains for about 4 years. I thought the service was okay but remember arriving at the station at about 5:30am one morning to see loads of delays signs. I asked one of their staff what time was the next train to London and he replied, “ your guess is as good as mine”, to which I replied, “ I hope not you work for them”

It's all rather odd because the TL trains are no faster, although they have shifted slightly in the timetable. I do not see how this justifies the complete redrafting of EML trains, although I know we (at Wellingborough) will be getting some of the Corby electrics when they start. Some of the services we currently have start and end at Corby and are not slower.

I presume the work I've seen between W'boro' and Bedford is to reinstate both slow lines to give four tracks all the way from Bedford to Glendon Junction (for Corby).

I presume it will be double track right through and the branch from Kettering to Corby was finished some time ago. True that TL are no faster but there is a travel group in your area that have been petitioning for EMT to keep stopping services because they do not want to travel distances on what amount to commuter trains.

I know there have been many complaints about the hard seats on the new TL class 700 electrics but the Meridian units on the MML are hardly the last word in comfort.

And that's why many prefer to travel on 40 year old trains that are more comfortable.

Northern are making a great bid for this title at the moment.
Besides the regular strikes, there have been lots of delays and cancellations ever since the new timetable started. This is particularly bad in the Lancashire and Westmorland areas, and has been put down to a shortage of drivers, through not working rest days and having to learn new routes such as the Blackpool line, but there have also been tales of all rush-hour trains being cancelled one day on the commuter route from Gatley to Manchester, for example. There is talk of an emergency timetable coming in next week, but I am just glad I don't have to use them to get to work.

A few years I was living in Guildford but working in Darlington so I was a regular user of both South West and East Coast main line. I thought the standard on both was pretty good, but felt when their was a crisis East Coast were far better at responding and communicating. Whereas with South West they were quite happy to dump you off a train at Clapham and do nothing to tell you what was happening

60 cancellations on day 1 of the new NR timetable and the usual horror stories still coming out of GTR areas. I'm no Corbyn fan but some of these franchises have long gone past the point of a joke, problem is I can well remember the old BR days and everything was hardly rosy in the garden back then. Answers on postcards to the thousands of people hanging around every morning on platforms in the hope that trains will arrive.

I'm a little puzzled as to why there has been so much trouble elsewhere. A new timetable comes into operation every May and December, usually without anything more than a few minor problems. What's so different this time?

Re: [PaulC] Worst train company [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

My impression of the new timetable on Northern Rail is that there have been fewer cancellations or long delays, but there has been some severe overcrowding with people being left on platforms in the problem areas heading from Manchester towards Bolton and Preston. In the interests of fairness, I should say that I got a train from Stockport to Altrincham in the evening rush hour and that I got a seat and that it arrived just one minute late.

I don't think "Failing Grayling" will last in his post much longer. Too many backbench Tory MPs represent northern seats in affluent places like Knutsford or Shipley where plenty of people commute by train, let alone those in the south.
