Called upon as an emergency umpire for this fixture. A very decent game to be present at, a close game that threatened to go one way then the other then back again. Quarter scores of 8-8, 12-15, 24-19 and finally 27-25.

Sunday 28-10-18 @ 1230

Norfolk United - 57 Charnwood Rutland Warriors - 55

Mizuno England Netball Premier League Division 3

Langley Prep School, Taverham Hall

Attendance - 50ish

A very tight first quarter with the both teams leading at different points before a late goal run for Charnwood to lead 18-15. Charnwood's momentum carried on in to second quarter and they stretched the lead to six goals before NU pegged them back to be 27-30 down at half time. NU had the better of the third quarter to close the gap to one goal going in to last period. NU turned the game around in the last quarter but were made to work hard to hang on for the win by Charnwood who had won all three games prior to today.

Wednesday 31st October 2018 1-30pm
University of East Anglia 2nds - 30 University of Leicester 3rds - 35
BUCS Midlands 5B
UEA Sportspark

The game was very scrappy for the first five minutes or so with a distinct lack of goals before UEA started to pull out a bit of a lead that was pegged back to 9-7 at the end od the first quarter. Leicester improved in the second quarter to turn it around and lead 17-16 at half time, by three quarter time they had extended their lead (26-22) and just had the better of the last quarter to win by 5.

I was acting as scorer for the game.

Saturday 3rd November 11-30am
Norfolk United1 - 40 Billericay - 49
East Region League Division One
Langley Preparatory School, Taverham Hall

Acting as scorer for Norfolk United. A close game until last quarter, Billericay 12-10 up after first quarter which they'd stretched to 24-21 by half time. A drawn third quarter brought the score to 35-32, in the last quarter Billericay were on top and extended their lead to 49-40 by the end.

Saturday 3rd November 1-30pm
Norfolk United2 - 39 Hatfield Hawks - 38
East Region League Division Two
Langley Preparatory School, Taverham Hall

For game two I covered the timing for NU. After the first quarter NU led 12-8 and HH gradually chipped away at their lead but fell just short of getting a draw. Half time, 22-19 and then 31-29 at three quarter time and then just one goal in it at full time.

Norwich City Flyers - 31 Norwich Medics - 7

City Academy Norwich

The first game of a busy week of netball umpiring for me, another friendly to cover this evening and then two fixtures to cover on Thursday evening in Norwich Junior League. NCF got of to a flying start and led 11-0 at the first break and pulled further ahead by half time but Medics had improved quite a bit during this period (17-4), NCF pushed further ahead in by three quarter time (24-5) NCF had the best of the last quarter to win by 31-7.

Acting as
umpire for this fixture. Like Tuesday's game pretty one-sided right from the start, Panthers 12-2 up by the end of the first quarter and after a tighter second quarter 20-8. Panthers stretched the lead to 32-12 by three quarter time and following a far more even last quarter Panthers won 41-20.

Re: [mxhornet] Netball [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

On holiday in Malaysia, and two race fixtures took place while I was there, so it would have been rude not to pop along

Saturday 27 October: Penang Turf Club, George Town, Penang
Admission 6RM (1.20ish), plus a further 20RM transfer if you wanted to use the glass-fronted, air conditioned lounge.

A pleasant but small course on the western side of town which has been running fixtures since 1864. Lots of elevated viewing with seating to give a good view of the track. Not the same access to the horses as you often get at British courses - no standing at the rail of the parade ring, and the appearances in the ring were much briefer, just a couple of circuits in strict number order.

A standard oval of 1900m, albeit with a tighter bend on one side than the other, with a card of 8 races between 1100m and 1700m, so it was short, sharp action. The live races were punctuated by telecasts from Macau and Moonee Valley and Randwick in Australia so I got to see Winx win the Cox Plate. All the races, live and broadcast were roared home by an enthusiastic betting audience. It was a tote/pool system only with all the usual bets available.

A range of local food was available in the concourse which, on my first full day in the country was a bit hit-and-hope, but the ever reliable tactic of watching a few people in the queue and pointing/waving "I'll have the same as him" stood me in good stead to get a very tasty plate of mixed noodles and prawns for about 1.20.

Sunday 4 November: Selangor Turf Club, Kuala Lumpur
Admission 6RM (1.20ish). A similar a/c lounge was available, but I didn't indulge this time - a combination of some light cloud taking the edge off the heat and having acclimatised over the previous 10 days or so!

A much bigger facility, clearly capable of coping with much bigger crowds for day such as the local Triple Crown events. The turf club has been going since 1896 but only moved to this site in the 90s when their city centre venue was finally deemed just too much trouble with choking traffic etc.

Another standard oval, but with a short cut inner curve (as at Kempton) to give circuits of 1800m and 2000m. A marathon 11 race card consisted of five 1200m races followed by six 1400m events. Highlight of the card was the Supreme Challenge Cup with a purse of 102,500RM (just over 20k), by far the biggest of the two meetings. Much bigger facilities out back too, with an entire food court going on with a huge range of stuff to choose from. Ten days familiarity with local cuisine meant I was far more confident in ordering!

The telecasts from Singapore and Sha Tin in Hong Kong drew the same level of interest as before, and allowed me to see the 'enigmatic' Pakistan Star race in HK, but he found the going all too much and didn't produce a back to front barnstomer as he has in the past.

One nasty incident on the track saw one horse squeezed into the rail on the apex of the bend turning for home. Because of the inner/outer curve arrangement, the space the loose horse was running in gradually narrowed to nothing and it ended up bursting back through the (fortunately flimsy) running rail ending up back on the main course though well behind the field. The jockey was also largely OK though stood down for his remaining rides.

Two good afternoons out of my holiday, and another outpost of racing visited which is always interesting. Both courses easy to reach. I got a taxi from central George Town to Penang as I was just arrived still finding my way around. I got the driver to meet me just after the final race - a good move since the heavens opened on the way home. To get to Selangor I took the local metro system to Sungat Besi station from where there is a regular free shuttle bus to and from the course. Just come out of the station, down the steps, and head for clutch of locals scrutinising the racing form in the paper! An elderly bus will shortly arrive.

Not sure if I will attend myself or not, but all six teams in the North of England Lacrosse League Premier 1 (formed when the top three from each conference come together midway through the season) are playing at the Manchester Regional Arena, on the Etihad Campus site, with games facing off at at 12.30, 2.30 and 4.30 on Sunday 18th. Admission is free.

HORSE RACING
Monday December 3
MUSSELBURGH
Admission - 17 Programme - 3
A low key card of Class 4 and 5 races, though there were some decent finishes. Downer on the day was that four horses died as a result of a variety of incidents. Nothing that particularly linked the four incidents, but the course didn't help themselves by failing to give an update on the fate of any of the four, particularly Kensuke's Kingdom who won the opener but then pulled up with an injury. The horse ambulance was called but we only learnt of the horse's demise through Twitter. Some courses use a 'low wagon' if a horse dies or is put down but Musselburgh use and ambulance under all circumstances, so difficult to know whether a horse is being taken for treatment. Not jump racing's finest hour.

Sunday December 9
KELSO - Borders National Meeting
Admission - Annual Member, Programme 2.50
A very much more cheerful day with some cracking racing including a fine 16 runner contest for the Borders National.
A very popular winner of the feature race as HARRY THE VIKING secured a fourth consecutive win in the race for local trainer trainer, Greenlaw based Sandy Thomson. Up with the pace from the start, Harry The Viking saw his challengers fall away gradually and then saw off favourite Callet Mad in a duel up the Kelso hill, cheered on by all those whose horses were beaten or had no betting interest. Harry returned to the unsaddling enclosure to a rapturous welcome. Credit to rider Rachael MacDonald who is as good a claiming jockey as Scotland can currently boast.
Southern challenger ROMEO BROWN was a convincing winner of the opening maiden hurdle and looks potentially decent. Down the field keep an eye out for ARMATTIEKAN, who would have finished a decent third but for being practically down on his nose at the third last. He kept on well enough to the finish and will win a race in time.
CASTLETOWN put in an exemplary round of jumping in the Paris Pike Novices' Chase, but was outstayed by the more classy DONNA'S DELIGHT close home.
The low sun caused a problem late on with hurdles and fences being omitted in the straight. Health and Safety reached ridiculous levels in the last race when the last hurdle was omitted despite being at least 200 yards in the shadows. After 10 minutes faffing about deciding what was going to be missed I'd had enough and decided to leave early. I don't often miss a race but it was now a glorified flat race and my patience had been tested too far.

Next on the agenda racing wise is Kelso's meeting during the Christmas holiday. Course enclosure re-organisation has meant Members' areas are now rather limited. We are promised a new Members' Bar and Lounge in '2-3 years' time, but in the meantime membership has been reduced by 15 to 125 for 2019. Reciprocal freebies at other course have been beefed up which is one of my main reasons for having a membership, so I'm happy in the short term!

HORSE RACING

Wednesday January 2

Ayr

Admission - 23 , Programme - 3

Finished the holidays with a visit to Ayr. A rather chilly day, frost covers laid over night allowed the meeting to survive despite -3C.

Run of the mill racing in the main although Lucy Normile, who trains just up the M90 from me at Glenfarg, may have found a decent animal in Irish import CURRAMORE an impressive winner of the closing bumper.

Sunday January 13

Kelso

Admission - Annual Membership, Programme - 2.50

First meeting of the year at Kelso. Small fields prevailed as we desperately need a bit of rain to give a whole host of soft ground specialist horses a chance.

Very breezy and only the diehards like yours truly were watching from the top of the roof. Bright sunshine caused problems as it shines direct into the faces of the runners up the straight, which means hurdles and fences are omitted as the horses struggle to sight them into the sun.

One to watch from the day is novice hurdler SKIDDAW VALLEYS who made an eye-catching hurdling debut when chasing home two decent previous winners. Nicky Richards is a shrewd placer of his novices and should find a race for this one soon.

Saturday 19th January 2019 12-30pm
Norfolk United2 - 50 Comberton - 33
East Region League Division Two
Langley Preparatory School, Taverham Hall

I had been down to cover scoring for an ER1 fixture versus Tegate at 1130 but they conceded the game. However the following game in ER2 against Comberton was brought forward an hour, I said I'd cover this even though it would mean getting to football anywhere afterwards would be quite limited, particularly as I'd also booked myself in to work at 6pm making 3pm kick offs difficult to accomodate.

Acting as scorer for Norfolk United. NU 15-7 up after first quarter which they'd stretched to 29-15 by half time. The third quarter brought the score to 42-21, in the last quarter Comberton pulled it back by 4 goals as NU made full use of their bench blooding some youngsters with the game safe. Final score 50-33.

Saturday 2nd February 1230
Team Beds - 46 Norfolk United2 - 26
East Region League Division Two
University of Bedfordshire, Polhill Campus

Acting as scorer/timekeeper for Norfolk United. I had covered the reverse fixture which Team Beds won 40-33 and wasn't sure what to expect after a strange opening quarter during which NU took a 4-0 lead before TB led 7-4 and then after NU drawing level again TB edged to a 10-9 lead after the first 15 minutes. However after that the home side were in control, 22-13 by half time and then 34-19 by three quarter time before establishing a 20 goal margin by full time.

This fixture marked part two of what should have been a triple of sorts, I had ticked off my 41st different parkrun at Pocket (St Neots) on the way and had planned to get in a game of football afterwards. Original plan was for Biggleswade Town v Leiston, which fell to the weather on Friday but Biggleswade United seemed confident their game would go ahead and tweeted that it was definitely on during the morning, however the match referee thought otherwise, as I found out on arrival at Second Meadow.

Wednesday 6th February 2019 1-30pm
University of East Anglia - 31 Oxford University - 51
BUCS Midlands 2B
UEA Sportspark

Top of the league and 100% before the game Oxford were strong favourites to win this, they had won the reverse fixture 48-21. Oxford led 16-6 after the first quarter, UEA coped better in the second quarter but Oxford led 28-14 by half time. Oxford were dominant again in the third quarter and led 43-19 at the start of the last quarter, UEA had easily their best 15 minutes to reduce the deficit to 20 goals by full time.

I was acting as scorer for the game.

Netball [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Saturday 16-02-19 6pm

Saracens Mavericks - 68 Team Bath - 45

Vitality Netball Superleague

Essex Sport Arena

Attendance - 1000ish ?

Admission - 18 / programme - 1 (16 pages glossy)

I was able to double up with football at 2-30 (East Bergholt United). . Mavericks are based in Hatfield, Hertfordshire and are playing some of this season's games in Colchester to try and spread their fan base. They are also taking a game on the road to Milton Keynes this season. Ticket price up from 12 last season when I saw them play Wasps, quite a hike however they were charging 15 for game at Hatfield, but still not too bad for top level sport. The programme is much improved from last season, cover price down to 1 rather than 2, though both games I attended last season they were given away.

The match was fourth v third and close game looked very likely however Mavericks were soon on top and led 18-10 after first quarter and then 35-22 by half time, further ahead by three quarter time 53-31, Team Bath had their best 15 minutes and only allowed Mavericks to stretch their lead by a further goal by the end.

I have a ticket for Mavericks home game at Hatfield against Manchester Thunder in four weeks, hopefully a closer contest.

Point to point Horse racing
@ Charing, Kent

Admission 10, Racecard 3

Beautiful weather for my first point to point fixture in a long time. Charing is just off the M20 and about 6 miles from Ashford. The site being massive with plenty of room for vehicles & food stalls etc... The queue for the beer tent at one point was about 50 deep.

As with pretty much every point to point fixture I go to the fields were all very small although I suspect this may have had something to do with the recent equine flu? Most impressive winner of the day was the previously Nicky Henderson trained Laurium who at 11/10 looked a massive price.

With a picnic lunch and the lovely spring like weather a fantastic day.
