Tuesday 21st February 2017 7.30pm
Dereham - 2 Norwich Dragons Seconds - 2
Women's East Hockey League Division One North
Honeysuckle Drive
Attendance - 20 (rough headcount)

Decided this was too good an chance to miss with the only other outdoor option being an umpteenth revisit to Plantation Park.

A close encounter through out, with visitors taking the lead 21 minutes in only for the hosts to equalise 3 minutes before half time. Second half saw the home side take the lead midway through before it became again all square with a minute to go.

Unless something rather unusual like this crops up, I doubt I'll see in anymore hockey this season.

Wednesday 22-02-17 7pm
Golden Girls -24 Watton Lightning - 21
City Academy Norwich
Norwich Winter League

Acting as scorer, completing a month of games with one of the Watton sides playing. Watton led 7-5 after the first quarter, GG dominated the second to lead 12-8 at half time. This had become 20-14 by the end of the third period. Watton had the best of the last quarter to pull it back to three goals.

Wednesday 01-3-17 8pm
Golden Girls -29 Rackheath Red -15
City Academy Norwich
Norwich Winter League

Acting as scorer, GG again this week though a few players unavailable. However enough quality to lead 11-5 after the first quarter, GG edged the second to lead 16-8 at half time. By the end of the third period, GG lead 23-12. Rackheath scored very late on to claim a bonus point for losing by less than 50%.

HORSE RACING
Saturday March 4
KELSO
Going - Heavy
Admission - Annual Member
Programme - £2

Kelso's big meeting of the season including a Grade 2 Novices' Hurdle and a Listed Chase. The going was about as heavy as I can remember it since getting into the habit of regular pre-race course walk. There was some very wet patches with a little surface water in places, though the horses did get through it.

The course car park was in a desperate state and I took care parking on some firmer ground after an early arrival. Even then it was a wing and a prayer to get through the boggy areas. Plenty had to be towed out of the mud on exit. The course executive really need to put down some hard core or mesh on what is no more than a pasture. There's a new high school being built next door and it wouldn't have taken much wit to arrange some hard core nin conjunction with the developers.

Promising novice REIVERS LAD strolled away with the first and will make up into a steeplechaser. SLANELOUGH stayed on promising from the rear for second (trainer and jockey hauled in to the stewards but realistically second was the best they were going to achieve) .
Nick Alexander landed his father's memorial race with CLAN LEGEND, a home bred gelding out of the mare Harrietfield who was the last horse to be bred by Cyril Alexander before his death.
The Premier Hurdle saw a clear winner in MOUNT MEWS who coped with the mud a good deal better than 3 opponents. This one could be very decent and is now aimed at an Aintree novice hurdle.
SELDOM INN caused a surprise in beating the Southern challengers for the Premier Chase. This one has had jumping problems but is very decent on his day and his trainer has a useful staying trio in this winner, Seeyouatmidnight and Harry The Viking. Sandy Thomson's Greenlaw stable may well have three in the Scottish National, though Seldom Inn may not appreciate the hustle and bustle of a big field.

Wednesday 08-03-17 8pm
OC Chargers - 10 Eagles - 55
Norwich & District Winter League
City Academy Norwich

My allocated game as a scorer, top of the table meant business in the last fixtures of the winter season to confirm their title. 13-1 up after the first quarter, a repeat in the second period meant it was 26-2 at half time. No let up in third quarter as it became 40-5 by the last break, more of the same to finish a high scoring last quarter.

Summer league starts on Monday, not much of break for most teams !! However Trowse who I score for are in a split division six with no league games until after Easter.

Wednesday 22-03-17 7pm
Norfolk United Blue - 62 Thoroughbreds Foals - 19
Norwich & District Summer League Division One
UEA Sportspark

After a blank week, I took in my first game of the "summer" season. NU in control right from the start, 18-4 up after 15 minutes. This had grown to 31-9 by half time. The score had pretty much doubled by full time, it being 49-14 which a quarter to go.

Foals fielded several youngster who are new to this level I recognised some of them from division five and six games from last year.

Saturday 15 April 2017
Netball Superleague
Severn Stars 47 Loughborough Lightning 56
Ticket £12

Needed something in easy reach to pair with Stourbridge v Frickley and this fit the bill perfectly.

An easy half hour train journey from Stourbridge Junction to Worcester Shrub Hill and then a walk across the city to the Worcester Arena, a venue I had previously visited for basketball & wheelchair basketball.

Severn Stars are one of two new Midlands teams to join the league for 2017 (along with Coventry based Wasps).

Home side edged the first two quarters 14-12 in each but after half time Loughborough bolted out, stormed into the lead and were absolutely electric!

Wednesday 19-04-17
Watton Storm - 11 Aylsham - 28
Norwich Summer Netball League Div 6
City Academy Norwich

My first scoring allocation of the summer season, an interesting looking fixture between two teams new to the league. Storm to supplement their other club team Lightning and Aylsham who had switched from the North Norfolk League in search of better competition.

An unusually low scoring game, particularly given two decent enough sides, also far more even than the score suggests. Ayslham however led throughout 7-3, 13-5, 19-7 at the end of respective quarters.

Thursday 20-04-17
Thoroughbreds Ponies - 21 Trowse - 27
Norwich Summer Netball League Div 6
Sewell Park Academy

I decided to opt for netball over football with an interesting looking fixture between relegated Trowse and another young side. Due to a shortage on the Trowse coaching team I ended up doing their stats for the game.

A tight game throughout with two drawn quarters. Trowse led 5-3 after the first quarter and started well in the second only for Ponies to peg them back to a two goal lead (11-13) at half time. Trowse had their best period after the break to come off 23-17 up and held on after a tight last quarter to win by 6 goals.

Monday 24-04-17 7pm
Norfolk United Royal - 47 Thoroughbreds Mustangs - 64
Norwich & District Summer League Division One
UEA Sportspark

I was due to score at the one remaining local venue I've not visited but I got a message that Notre Dame had conceded at 6-15 pm, so as I was already geared to go out for netball a quick check of the fixtures ans I plumped the only top division on offer. However I did still end up scoring after someone due to cover the game was a no show and it was a busy game to score.

Mustangs had the edge right from the start and led 15-10 at the first quarter end, extending this to 27-17 by half time. Then further stretched the led by three quarter time to 45-31, then they had the better of a manic last quarter to win by 17 goals.

Thursday 27 April

Perth Races
Admission £20

Having been to Hibs v Raith the previous night today it was Perth Races. The course is in the grounds of Scone Palace and around 3 miles from the town centre. Loved the course, decent views and nice atmosphere.

Decent card with really competitive racing. If I was to take one horse out of the day it would be the Nicky Richards trained Duke of Navan who after 550 days off the trace I thought ran a great race and would have won but for being a bit sharper.

Hotshots - 24 McCarthy Gems - 35
Norwich & District Summer League Division Four
City Academy Norwich

As is becoming typical this season a swap around saw me at this fixture rather the original Division Six game I had been allocated. So a bit of a bonus really.

The game was far closer than the final score suggests, Gems led 11-5 after the first quarter and then 18-7 by half time. Both second half quarters were drawn, 10 a piece and then 7 all.

Wednesday 4th May

greyhounds @ Hove

Admission / racecard: free

With being on holiday on the south coast had an evening out at the dogs. No winners though from the nine races we bet on.

This was my 7th venue for greyhound racing after Nottingham, Hall Green, Perry Barr, Sittingbourne, Coventry & Poole.

Off to Fontwell Park this evening (5th May) for the races.

Wednesday 10-05-17 7pm
Firebirds - 25 Notre Dame - 33
Norwich & District Summer League Division Six
City Academy Norwich

My scoring allocation this week, back to Division 6.

After Notre Dame had led 5-0 early on Firebirds rallied and held them for rest of the first quarter (8-3), then a drawn second period brought up a half time score of 11-16. In the third ND eased away a touch to lead 25-18 having been pegged back to a one goal lead at one point. Firebirds had the better of the last quarter to reduce ND's lead to 5 goals, thus gaining a bonus point.

Watton Lightning - 82 Trowse - 6

While I quite expected a home win, after seeing Trowse win away a few weeks back I thought they might give Watton more of a game than this. Trowse were struggling for numbers and fielded some younger players which given how young their regular players are is saying something.

My scoring allocation this week.

Dragons won the first quarter 10-7 and then had their best 15 minutes as they extended the lead to 17-9 by half time. Rackheath had the better of both second half periods, winning both 7-5 to draw closer and closer as the game went on, at one point they were just a goal behind before Dragons pulled away again in the last five minutes.

Sunday 21st May 2017
Fenland Grasstrack Club Meeting
Admission £10
Programme £2.00

I have to confess I didnít know what to expect here. I imagined it to be the same as speedway but on grass. Itís a bit different to that.

Forty Ė six races were lined up for the meeting which started 30 minutes late. They come in all different categories from veterans to little kids. They also come in different numbers of participants per race. I think the first race had 10. There were also sidecar races which I didnít expect both clockwise and anti-clockwise around the track. One striking factor was the ability of the riders or lack of it in the same races. Some were really good others looked like they were just learning to ride a motorbike. This led to riders being lapped.

Everything was very basic here. Located just outside the Cambridgeshire village of Wood Walton (not to far from Sawtry on the A1) an exposed field on the top of a hill was used. The track is marked out with little plastic St George flags with the safety fence being made up of fence posts and rope. These were set out so they were 6 deep. Not a bad turn out of spectator which led to people parking their vehicles facing the track and either sitting in their cars to spectate or bringing out portable chairs to sit on. The majority of spectators did seem to be of the 40+ age group.

Facilities comprised of a burger van and a bloke selling previous meeting DVDís. I didnít see anything else.

Hellesdon Hawks - 24 Rackheath - 45
Norwich & District Summer League Division Six

My scoring allocation this week.

Rackheath again as the away side, faring much better this week. Hawks scored the first goal but Rackheath soon took control, leading 11-6 after the first quarter and 21-14 at half time. If there was any doubt as to the potential winners the third quarter put paid to that Rackheath leading 33-19 at the start of the final period. Another dominant 15 minutes gave the away side a comfortable victory.

Connacht Senior Football Championship quarter final
London 0-16 Leitrim 3-10

At McGovern Park, Ruislip
Adm £10, prog £5, att maybe 4k

The redeveloped London GAA headquarters a Ruislip finally opens after a few false starts, and very good it is too. The main clubhouse remains as it was, but the rest of the ground is unrecognisable. The pitch has been shunted slightly to the NW, towards the houses on Masson Ave. This means the 'road' along that side of the pitch is no more, replaced by a couple of steps of uncovered hard standing.

The space created has been filled with a 1,950 seat stand running pretty much the full length of the pitch with about 20 rows of green plastic seats. A perspex roof spans the central portion of the seats. The dressing rooms are under the stand, so players now enter the middle of the pitch rather than from the social club at the end.

An U-17 challenge between London and Warwickshire opened the bill on an immaculate pitch, and was won by the home team with some good potential on display in both sides.

The main even was keenly contested throughout and on another day London could easily have won with the rub of the green. The teams turned around with Leitrim two points to the good (1-06 - 0-07), and just beginning to look like they were getting their act together after posting a number of poor wides during the first 35.

Whether the break came at just the wrong time for them, or the London team talk was especially inspiring, things changed tack after the break, and London rapidly turned things around to go into a two point lead 1-07 to 0-12. One of the games decisive moments soon followed about 15 minutes into the second half. London worked the ball forward and a fine shot beat the keeper across his body but crashed back off the inside of the post and was cleared. Within a couple of minutes Leitrim had scored a great second, and followed up with a third a few minutes later.

London got back into the game again, and got within two, but couldn't land a telling blow, and wasted a couple opportunities for points looking for another goal.

Overall a good account of themsleves from London, but Leitrim will have their work cut out in a Connacht semi final facing Roscommon. London enter the qualifiers system.

For anybody wanting a trip to Ruislip to see the new facilities, London will play all their NFL and NHL games at home in the spring 2018 season, having spent the entire 2017 season on the road while building works went on. I'll post fixtures here once they are confirmed in late 2017.
