Pretty apt name for a Spoons in Wales "The Pits"

Yes we understand that. All that some people are asking is that you please take a little more time reading your posts before sending them, use capital letters in the correct places, check the spelling etc. Your contibutions are valuable, doing the above would make then even more so.

The nearest one to me is not going to win any awards unless it's for most drunks before 10am or most down and outs on the pavement outside a pub award. Now opens at 7am. Mind you it is in a 1960's shopping centre where Greggs the Bakers sells out of pasties before 9am.

Only ever been in 5 or 6, the one's in Fleetwood and Harlow would not win many awards either.

I've been to a fair few of these places on my travels over the past few years. They've actually just opened up a brand new one (well about 3 weeks old now) in Ponte thats quite nice and is doing its bit in reviving a town centre that has gone a bit downhill since Xscape opened up.
There's the Glassblower in CasVegas and the Six Chimneys in Wakey that are quite nice in my experiences.

4 of them in Milton Keynes and they are all pretty much the same, I favour the one nearest the station as it's within walking distance of home and it's a decent size. The ones further afield are more interesting however, particularly liked the 1 in Telford.

Portsmouth Spoons

Isambard Brunel (near Pompey & Southsea Stn) I avoid like the plague. Beer is hideously poorly kept.
White Swan ( 50 yards further on from Isambard Brunel) Slow service and half decent pint. Good but limited selection
Jean Jacques (Fratton Station) Good selection of beers well kept and upto 20p pint cheaper than the Spoons in the City centre. Recommended
Lord Baker (London Road North End) Haven't been in for a while but the beer was off.
Cosham (Cant remember its name) Again havent been in for a while. Decent pint but go in at night at your peril

Onto Fareham's Spoons

Lord Arthur Lee - One that the casual Fareham fan tried to turn into the UK's first drive through pub! Has improved markedly in the past couple of years. Good selection of beers and on the whole well kept. Occasional poorly kept pint but compared to how it was 3-4 years ago 100 times better

The Crown - Smaller pub similar to the White Swan, Always appears to have Triple fff beers which isnt a bad thing. Gets busy quickly.

I have visited many 'spoons hostelries up & down the country & by far the worst i have encountered is The White House in Luton.Just awful.Poor selection of beers, dreary decor & an intimidating atmosphere. Two near me in Dartford. The Paper Moon, one of the first 'spoons to be opened in Kent & now showing it's age & The Flying Boat, which is in a vast warehouse type building & was formerly one of The Litten Tree chain of pubs.Generally the concept of cheap drink & food as well as a good variety of beer is always going to be a winner! 186 done to date; mostly in the Midlands; mostly visited during the day or early evening; the best has to be the Babington in Derby with its impressive range of at least 15 different and usually scarce real ales; they are bound to attract a certain level of custom with its early opening and cheap beer; the strangest is also in Derby where there are 2 Spoons next door to each other; however only one bad experience to report; t`was after the last Peninsula Hop game when we decided to tick off the St Austell Spoons; they were getting ready for a Saturday night disco (being a Lloyds) and they had a male and female bouncer on the door; surely they won`t stop two late fifties old gits (blue nose Paul was with me); WRONG!! a full body search (by the male bouncer unfortunately) and the contents of my wallet, moths included, were scrutinised; we did get in to be greeted by a few well-known travellers, most of whom who seemed to have escaped the search. We must have looked well dodgy!!

I've been in The Paper Moon in Dartford a few times, nice enough pub although as you say it is perhaps showing its age a bit.

I can't say I've ever been into any Wetherspoons pub and thought 'I won't come in here again', the only bad experience I had was in Maidstone (Muggletons) when they totally cocked up our food order but in the end they gave us our money back and gave us the food free of charge so I can't grumble.

With pubs closing down left right and centre all over the country they do seem to have 'bucked the trend' so they must be doing something right.

Thoroughly recommend the Poste of Stone in Stone, always a good selection of ales, usually local. It's one of the few 'Spoons you can park outside too! The worst one I've been in was in Fazakerley, Liverpool. That was down to the fact the beer was poor and it was rammed at teatime.

The good thing is you know what you're going to get at most and there is never one too far away, town centre locations aren't ideal for access though when you're driving. That's probably a good thing for some hoppers.....

Are you sure it's not The Fork Handles!!? So the Spoons management do have a sense of humour.Possibly named after the famous Two Ronnies sketch.Didn't Ronnie Barker reside in the Oxford area ? I think he had an antiques shop in Chipping Norton.

Ronnie Barker was born in Bedford but for many years of his life lived in Oxfordshire, as a youngster he lived about 100 yards from where I'm sitting typing this, a modest house at the top of Florence Park Estate which at the time he was living there would have been housing for car factory wokers many of whom were Welsh, Patrick Mower lived nearby. Ronnie Barker went to school at Oxford High School for Boys which was basically the best non fee paying school in Oxford at the time and only a couple of hundred yards from the http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/...ubs/the-four-candles After he retired he had a Anitque shop in Chipping Norton and lived in a village nearby. I met him a few times and he was a very friendly man, though slightly shy, he insisted people call him Ronnie. If you said hello Mr Barker he would say call me Ronnie, his wife Joy was / is also a very pleasant person. I did some work for him getting him mattress's and sprung bases for some Antique beds which he had that were non standard sizes.

As I've been sampling pints of lime and soda during this hot weather I must take cap off to Wetherspoons The New Cross Turnpike at Welling for charging me 30p. At the other end of the scale I have paid 2.30 for the same drink at the Bell & Compass at Charing X.

The pub I frequent on a Sunday evening in Torquay for a quiz usually charge 1 for said drink, which I think is fairly reasonable considering the prices there for other drinks are higher than most pubs in torbay.

Popped into Weatherspoons Society Rooms in Maidstone for a quick one whilst waiting for a train, bumped into an old mate and ended up getting a (much) later train after sinking several pints of the very agreeable Tawny Owl from Cotleigh Brewery, service was a bit slow at times but otherwise all good!

opposite experience for me this week as I ticked off the Dragonfly at Birmingham Airport (landside). I know they have a captive audience but the beer choice was virtually non-existent; Ruddles or Abbot or Pedigree; last beer was chosen and it was bland....food was adequate but portions were poor; the only good thing besides the new tick was that there were more than 2 people serving!!!

The posts above from Isaac and GrumpyDwarf sum up Wetherspoons perfectly: some very good, some grim.

Isaac, Cotleigh's beers are indeed marvellous. One of the very best of the first wave of new breweries from the 70s, producing beer that is of genuine class and up there with established 'old-timers' such as Timothy Taylor, Batham and Harveys.

opposite experience for me this week as I ticked off the Dragonfly at Birmingham Airport (landside). I know they have a captive audience but the beer choice was virtually non-existent; Ruddles or Abbot or Pedigree; last beer was chosen and it was bland....food was adequate but portions were poor; the only good thing besides the new tick was that there were more than 2 people serving!!!

Any plans to tick the air-side Spoons ? Sly

Decent pint but go in at night at your peril.

Sounds just like the 'Parchment Makers' 'Spoons in Havant town centre - a while since I've been in there, but its reputation doesn't really attract return visits. It used to be the town's job centre and benefits office back in the 1980s, and from my times of signing on in my youth I don't think they did much to the interior decor when they converted it to a pub!

The other particularly bad 'Spoons that sticks in my memory is the one near Maidenhead United's ground - I'd often be forced to use this while commuting to/from Marlow because all the other pubs in Maidenhead town centre were even worse.

More positively, I remember a very good Wetherspoons in the centre of Godalming

While wasting an hour of my life wandering around the centre of Swindon this morning, I passed a 'Spoons about noon that was doing a roaring trade with at least twenty smelly old gits sat outside already hard at it. One was the spitting image of Bruce Forsyth (but in tracky bottoms and with a flee-bitten mut on a rope for company). This 'Spoons was called 'The Savoy'.

Going slightly off-topic, there is a homeless guy often sitting on the floor at Oxford bus station who looks just like Teddy Sheringham (but on hard times, and usually shirtless).

When I go shopping to the "Cowley Centre" at about 8am there is always a good assortment of "Smelly Gits" already inside the William Morris, they now open at 7am. As the local song goes, there's only two William Morris's.

Must look for "Teddy" next time I venture into Oxford.

Going back to the original question posed, I regard Wetherspoons in the same light as Macdonalds, Burger King, Brewers Fare etc . . . Standardised, franchised and redolent of the unpleasant side of capitalism. The 'food' is delivered in microwavable containers; Service is poor; Beer is often badly kept; Staff are paid the minimum wage . . . but because Wetherspoons is cheap we are supposed to think it's great.

With their cheap prices and special offers, they are responsible for the demise of many excellent local and independent pubs, and for promoting the 'binge drinking' culture which blights the UK.

Thankfully, so far, the local council where I live have refused them planning permission on the grounds of impact on local businesses. How long they will maintain that stance remains to be seen.

Its easy to generalise, and to a certain extent I agree. However some 'Spoons are excellent. The Penny Black in Northwich is one such example, the beer range is good. I believe the one in Mold is the same. On the other hand, The Moon Under Water on Deansgate in Manchester has woeful service, and The Swan in Weymouth has the least exciting beer range of any 'Spoons I've been in.

In my experience (several visits, not my choice......) they are always short staffed, can't manage to recognise who is "next" and woe betide you if you want a beer that is downstairs when you are upstairs............

About ten yards down the road from Chequers! Bizarre really to have another.

Anyway I think Wetherspoons food is vastly superior to the tat that is served up at McDonald's, KFC etc. It is much healthier and I do think it is of better quality.

Also, it tends not to attract the proletariat that the aforementioned fast food outlets seem too.

My top three (out of only 195 so far)-this is based on range of beers/quality;
1) Babbington Arms-Derby
2) Cap in Hand-Tolworth/Surbiton
3) Sir Henry Segrave-Southport

Have by and large enjoyed the food at the Spoons- the large breakfast at the Southport outlet yesterday was both enormous/well cooked/tasty.

2 new ones locally to tick this week; Coventry(by the Sky Dome), Northfield (Birmingham)

The handpump clip states "Macno Piwo Strong Beer". Piwo is Polish for beer, don't know what macno means..... maybe "strong"??

It's nice to see Grumpy's eyes are up to their usual standard....it's actually Mocne Piwo which as Paul rightly says is Polish for strong beer. Not that I think a 5.1% beer is classed as strong in Poland.

God knows what Grumpy's actually beer list looks like compared to the proper namesWink

Ponte Carlo - Do those vouchers keep you going until midday on one of your away trips?Tongue

I visited The William White (JDW) in Nuneaton last Saturday, then walked opposite to The Angel which wasnt a JDW but looked identical in decor and much the same (apart from guest ales) on tap!

Prior to my visit to Griffin Park today I ticked off The Rocket in Putney which is a brand new JDW Cool
Seems to have been designed to appeal to the more well off, with a section of table service with riverside views and rather more expensive prices, however the beer was excellent as was the new Beef Casserole Tongue

Re: [garethwrexy] wetherspoon pubs [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Have followed this thread with interest as have spent quite a lot of time on JDW premises since ventured to the first one in 1987 ( I think that it was the now closed Edgware branch). Like many large chains there are the good ( Babbington, Crosse Keys and JJ Moons (Hornchurch)), bad (Luton!! and the now closed branches at Tilbury and South Ockendon) and the ordinary (Rather too many).

What I like about about JDW's is on the whole they are reliable, the ale is nearly always in at least reasonable condition (and on the rare conditions it is 'off' I have never encountered any problems in returning and they are good value. In the area where I live, the price of a pint is at least 30% less than what you would find in the 'locals'. Not surprising that so many pubs are closing when they are charging 3.00+ for a pint. Plus like PonteCarlo for twenty pints per annum, I receive a discount of 50p which covers my annual CAMRA membership.

Yes the chain does suffer from an idenity problem and are seen as 'chavvy' or places where gentlemen of a certain age congregate to while away time. Depends on the branch. The Havant branch yesterday had a wide variety of people from a solitary lady who was at least 85 enjoying her lunch, a group of Droylsden supporters and plenty of younger people. Though the Barking branch has it's fair share of characters who would not be candidates for high office.

Though for all the time that I spend on JDW premises the Babbington is the only pub which would get into a TT top 20 of pubs listing. You cannot compare the vast majority of JDW with the Theobald Arms (Grays), Alexandra Arms (Kettering), Wellington and Anchor (Birmingham), Wagon and Horses (Halesowen) etc etc etc

Just a few questions to you all really on Pubs in general as I turn 18 soon. Probably asking silly questions!

1) Is buying the Good Beer Guide a good investment?

2) Is CAMRA membership worth getting?

3) Do people keep records of pubs they've drunk in/beers they've had?

I've tried 30 real ales I think so far, most of those on the Pennine Way. Those included J.W Lees Strawberry Beer, Hobgoblin, Timmy Taylor's Landlord and every Black Sheep brewery beer.

Called in Gaffers Row Crewe yesterday and was amazed to find the guest beers at 2-05 for modest ABV's , this I think was upto 4.5% above that 2-30 .
What started life as cheap beer pubs is now getting a tad overpriced.

Agreed by the way there, hoddy - the prices in some real ale 'bars' (if anyone has done the Further North in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, you'll know what I'm talking about) are on the ludicrous side!

Anyway onto Tom's points!

1 - Definitely for me, I still haven't finished Yorkshire yet!
2 - Absolutely! The thing is Tom, if your under-26 I believe its about 16-20. You get 20 worth of Wetherspoons vouchers, so basically you get your membership paid for by drinking!
3 - Again, definitely! I score my beers on the beerscoring (original I know) website. A lot of the information goes to which pubs gain entry into the GBG in my membership area.

1 Depends - it's just a guide at a point in time, and can be quite subjective (baffling) at times. Do not treat as a bible, merely someone else's opinion

2 Dunno - never been a member. The book is cheaper from Amazon than from Camra.

I'll consider CAMRA towards Christmas.

I'll probably start records with beers, I've "ticked" 20 pubs already. 12 of those on the Pennine Way. Depends how much time I get.

If you're going to visit 'Spoons pubs then a CAMRA membership is a no-brainer. For 20 subscription you get 20 in vouchers for Wetherspoons (40 x 50p off a pint) and the GBG for 10 rather than 15.99 or whatever, so you're actually in pocket.

Been to the one in Feltham a few times (albeit not for a couple of years) when staying at the St. Giles Hotel when down there for RL games and it's always been a really good craic in there with the staff and the locals. Must be our northern charm.

The Wetherspoon's in Leigh originally opened as a Lloyd's Bar and had bouncers on the door etc which meant people had to make the effort when going there (no trainers etc) and so made for quite a pleasant atmosphere, albeit not particularly lucrative which meant it was soon 'downgraded'.

Very busy on Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights and the food is decent enough for what you pay, particularly at breakfast. It gets a few down and outs during the day, but so will any other place flogging booze at 1.40 a pint.

Also stayed at the Wetherlodge in Bridgend when watching Leigh RL away to Celtic Crusaders...now that had some 'characters'!

3.FLEET
4.WALTHAM CROSS
5.WITHAM
6.RAYLEIGH

8.FOREST HILL

As for the worst, well, Eltham, Stoke Newington and also Stafford (where I once had my coat and bag stolenShocked) are way below standard!

Another problem has arisen, what to do about pubs that have closed? Do they still count to your total? I have 7 now gone including one of my favourites which was at Goodmayes Frown long gone.

It's funny you don't rate the one in TELFORD that was one of the better ones I've visited. As for the best still have yet to visit an outstanding one.

Worst one for me is the Moon Under Water in MK Theatre District. We have 4 here, the two better ones are near the station.

Edit - I forgot the one in Barking which has 'characters'. Unsure

Maybe I've been to all the wrong Weatherspoons but the majority seem to be populated by life's dropouts, chavs and scumbags. Add to that they're normally a mess, the tables & bar are soaked in beer and the service ordinary. One of the better ones I've been to is the Met Bar in Baker St. which is only let down by the dreadful service. As for the food....Pirate

Worst one for me is the Moon Under Water in MK Theatre District. We have 4 here, the two better ones are near the station.

Edit - I forgot the one in Barking which has 'characters'. Unsure

Totally agree on all those points, surprisingly I have only been to the Telford pub on one occasion as I always go to Wellington which is where the New Bucks Head ground is located, there was talk of having a JDW there but it came to nothing unfortunately.
I have ticked all the MK ones and you are quite right about the theatre district one, on my visit they only had one ale and all plastic glasses Crazy the one near the station is very good.
Barking Laugh enough said!
There are outstanding ones! Most people seem to agree on Colchester Tongue

Agreed there are some dodgy ones but overall I never have cause to complain, pick one from my top 10 and compare with the ones you've visited Angelic

A pen picture for the William Morris in Cowley, the only other pub in the area The Nelson / The Nelly (not a Wetherspoons pub) has been called jokingly "The Jockey" by many in the area.

Colchester has such a fine array of excellent GBG pubs I've never felt the need to visit the 'spoons there. I guess it would have to be good, though, given the competition in the town.

Well, where do I start Unsure first off it is only a small pub and does not offer the full food menu. Also despite the 3 guest ales on offer from Weltons Brewery the barman didn't seem to know what ale was! I chose the Empire Stout but I watched in horror as a lager glass full of froth was poured then a second attempt with another lager glass was made this time half liquid half froth! The barman then disappeared to the kitchen? Bemused he returned and had a third try with a beer glass! And then used his comb which I presume he had just washed in the kitchen, to comb off the froth from the other two glasses before pouring into one and presenting this to me! Surprisingly the end result was drinkable! But I am certain it was not the stout, more likely one of the other beers with the wrong clip on the pump Crazy
I played safe with the food and had the fish and chips, although nobody was eating it took 20mins to arrive but once again was surprisingly OK hence I award 3 out of ten for this establishment! Eltham is safe at the bottom with 2!
However, the broken, well worn tables, the strange looks from locals when eating, the heated discussions taking place and general ambience of the place was very uncomfortable, and I dared not even venture to the toilets! Worryingly all these experiences are echoed in the reviews posted on the beer in the evening website, take a look as they are a good read and sum it up perfectly!
I wanted to see if Brixton in general was also as bad as its reputation, and have to say on first impressions it is, sorry Brixton!
Even the OAPs had to be told not to smoke cannabis in the street Shocked

1.RUISLIP MANOR
2.COLCHESTER
3.FLEET
4.WALTHAM CROSS
5.WITHAM
6.RAYLEIGH
7.RAYNES PARK
8.FOREST HILL
9.TUNBRIDGE WELLS
10.HOLLOWAY

As for the worst, well, Eltham, Stoke Newington and also Stafford (where I once had my coat and bag stolenShocked) are way below standard!

Another problem has arisen, what to do about pubs that have closed? Do they still count to your total? I have 7 now gone including one of my favourites which was at Goodmayes Frown long gone.

Edit to the above. Stafford, you have climbed out of the bottom 3 thanks to Brixton Sly Alfreton is down there too! Cold sausages and off beer! Mad

Talking of Spoons, I popped into Hamilton Hall at Liverpool Street last Thursday, used to be the
biggest grossing pub in England but not sure now and bumped into Keepz,
currently banned from this parish and out came the nail box and the wine flowed.
I only frequent pubs on hot days now (smoking ban) but was a regular there when working
in the City and considering the pub game has one of the biggest turnover of staff
I was quite surprised to see how many bar staff were still there after three years.
Job satisfaction? Good pay?

As with most things these days it seems to come down to the individual and whether they're interested or not, doesn't matter how much you train them if they have no interest n the job then you end up with poor service and if that person happens to be the manager then you've had it! Frown
I can only presume this is the case at Alfreton! Crazy
As regards Victoria, money and profit first above all else I expect, hence the problems with our public transport but that's another story...

Brings back memories of my visit to the HH back in May 2008 whilst on my way to the Trophy final between Ebbsfleet & Torquay at Wembley. We had arranged to meet a couple of Fleet supporters from Essex which we duly did at 11.00 am.Of course the beer started flowing & before we knew it there was only really us left in the HH.Suddenly realised in horror that we'd lost track of time & it was now 2.10 pm! Mad rush for the tube ensued.Fortunately there were no delays & managed to take our seats in the 'new' Wembley just 5 mins before k.o.
As much as Spoons are fine establishments i try to visit more obscure 'back street' locals on my travels,as i've found Spoons have become somewhat sanitised of late. The Spoons success story is probably to the detriment of the many pubs that are closed/closing down.An unlikely business plan from Tim Martin but which i would endorse is a Spoons policy of operating village pubs which have been decimated in recent times.Never going to happen,unfortunately....Unsure

I understand that the above was FleetFan's last trip to the Hamilton Hall until he was persuaded by Mr Tabby to join him for a few saucers of gold top on Friday night. In JDW terms the HH would be a good pub if it had just a few people in it. Unfortunately, on the rare occasions that I venture there it is completely rammed Friday evening was no exception and as a result going this was not the most pleasant of drinking experiences.

Much better and much less crowded was the Crosse Keys which was visited later in the evening.

We were always knocking on the door at 11am in the mid-90s before
away games and by 11.30 it was rammed out (usually).
Not worked up the City for a few years but Thursday/Friday nights
used to be heaving.
Think I mentioned before it was the biggest grossing (s) pub in the
country. Not sure about now though.

I've visited the one airside at Terminal 3 at Heathrow & also the two at Gatwick in both the South & North Terminals, as well the one at Edinburgh Airport.
Just recovering from the excesses of my Friday night jaunt with Timmytabby at the Hamilton Hall.On his recommendation tried a 'Swedish Blonde' which certainly went down a treat.I might even have a beer of the same name next time as well! Cool

The Edwin Chadwick in Longsight in Manchester closed to become an Indian restaurant, but I can't think of any others, although I did hear that Wetherspoons disposed of some of their earliest acquisitions in the south east because they no longer fit the company's profile. That was probably the Longsight pub's problem too - by all accounts, it was a very good pub, but it didn't get the Friday\Saturday night crowd.

Manchester and County in (surprisingly) Manchester City Centre is one to either avoid or have a quick pint in and go, been in there few times now, not a patch on the other 4 city centre Spoons. Went in last night, beer selection was crap and the guy behind the bar found it quite odd I'd want 2 halves of different beers than a full pint.

The one in Whitstable will be interesting. This is one of the away trips the Hamlet drinkers look forward to most. Lost of welcoming traditional boozers, with the particular favourite being the Ship Centurion, on the High Street.

I wonder if opening a Wetherspoons here will slowly but surely see a shift in peoples' drinking habits, & be the catalyst for some of the other pubs to close, as drinkers move to Wetherspoons with their pockets.

The difference is Wetherspoons actually serve a purpose, do a good job in providing what the customer wants and in most cases do it well. Can you say the same for an Arena stand? Not in my opinion Crazy
I always prefer a real country pub with local beer and good food given the choice, but it's also nice to have a Wetherspoons to visit and they have brought back to life many disused buildings and become a welcome addition to most towns, long may that continue Cool

Wellington`s (Telford) new Weatherspoons, the Sir William Withering (discoverer of digitalis), duly ticked this evening; hidden away down New Street, one of many narrow pedestrianised shopping streets in Wellington; it took some finding as the local council seem to have made cuts and taken down street names signs. Very new and clean; ten handpulls dispensing the usual range of beers at 2.35 a pint; food good quality although the service was a tad slow; interesting to see how long it lasts as many of the surrounding shops are either shut or looking past their sell-by date; their evening trade could be quiet as there is nothing in Wellington to drag the punters in.

Expensive food but a couple of different dishes on the menu and really fast service, also the first time EVER I have been served beer in a proper glass with a handle! and I didn't even ask for one.
I was impressedSmile
Overdid it a little at the Victoria Station Adnams festival beforehand. Sampled as many of their lovely beers as I could manage and met the head brewer responsible for such delicious creations as Explorer and Gunhill. Very enjoyable few hours.
Those in possession of their CAMRA membership card get a discount on the price of a pint too.
Still 4 days to go!
That Gunhill is AWESOME

Very old, that bring's an old true football story to mind.
Stoke v ? , after a rather robust challenge the referee called the perpetrator to one side and asks for his name . In a broad Scotish accent he responds 4 Kinnell. George was sent off.

The Postern Gate ( turn right out of the station ) is a proper pub with old wooden floor etc, I had a lovely pint of York Brewery Ghost ale on my visit. For food however I would go to the other more modern one near the city centre which is next to the bridge over the river and rather pleasant if a little lacking in atmosphere. Overall 8/10 for each

I went into a Wetherspoons for the first time a few weeks ago - the Tilly Shilling in Farnborough. I've avoided them on purpose as I try not to do chain or town centre pubs these days but it was alright. As my mate said, the locals haven't had a chance to wreck it yet.
I still prefer a nice little country pub tucked out of the way though.

Bangor Spoons on Wednesday.

Excellent on so many levels

1. Open the doors and you're at the bar straight away
2. Gents Loo's on ground floor. (always amazes me why they put them up so many flights of stairs)
3. Beer was kept in excellent condition and the staff knew what they were talking about
4. 2 minutes walk to the ground and once the emergency exits were opened at the end of the game less than 30 seconds away afterwards!

Here is a list/description of the North of Irelands Spoons, been given before ! Up to date Nov 13,2011.
Save it !
Surprised with your love of Fosters you don't have the Spoons booklet with all mentioned and new ones planned !

In Brighton there's such a range of wonderful eclectic pubs that I can't imagine why you'd want to spend time in a Wetherspoons. I tend to pop in when it's the pub of last resort in a place that's otherwise a real ale desert.

Ticked the TILLY SHILLING in FARNBOROUGH last night, pretty good, nice touch having the Spitfire propeller on the wall and some aircraft seating too Cool
Food and drink all fine.

This is the only one I've been in (I may have already said that on this thread?).
I'd never heard of Miss Shilling before I went there but her orifice was quite important to the war effort. http://en.wikipedia.org/...Shilling%27s_orifice

Full credit to whoever decides the names of Wetherspoons pubs as they must do some serious research. No-one I know in Camberley had heard of Claude Duval (Du Vall / Du Val?) until Wetherspoons named their pub after him.

Their website does a list of the upcoming branches so it shouldn't be too hard to extrapolate the number that open. Is that gross or net openings (accounting for the closures too)??

Quite a lot this year, usually about 6-10 listed in the magazine each time and that comes out every 2 months.

There's a VERY strong rumour that Weatherspoons are interested in a pub in Elburton. The Elburton Hotel has closed over the New Year and is on the A379 main road to Kingsbridge.

The other pub in Elburton The Ships Tavern is open and doing a roaring trade as a gastro pub (much far removed from my student drinking days when we knew it as "The Ship and Kicks")PirateSly

The Elburton is on the next roundaround down from the turning to Elburton Villa FC and is about 250yards away- should it happen (but I know the source works on Weatherspoons refits) I'll keep you all informed!

There's actually 4 or 5 now in the centre of Sheffield! It's actually the Banker's Draft and is one of the better ones in terms of variety (at least on my visits anyway).

Haven't been in the Bankers for years (once the custom from the nearby market pubs moved in following their closure). The one which used to be called just Wetherspoons is now the Benjamin Huntsman.

The Swim Inn had the last amount of choice on (it's more of a Lloyds Bar), 2 guests and the usuals. The Huntsman and Waterworks are ridiculously close to each other, I'm surprised you haven't done both of them before! I've never done the Sheaf Island, and still need the outskirts ones, Francis Newton, Rawson Spring and Woodseats Palace.

Not missing much with that one Eddie. Five ales normally on, but all Bradwell/kelham/Thornbridge. Nothing too exciting.

Checking on my records I need to do The Sheffield Waterworks Company, The Sheaf Island and The Swim Inn Hopefully done by the end of the month Smile

One of the beers was off when I did the Swim Inn, i.e. vinegar... Pirate

Sheaf Island has 2-3 guest on, but nothing special.
Sheffield Waterworks Company isn't great either, poor selection when we went in there.

Francis Newton is 2.45+ a pint and 3 guests on.
Rawson Spring had quite a few guests on and is fairly cheap.

Never done Woodseats Palace...

Was in there yesterday from 1pm (I think..fvck me my head hurts)...absolutely banging and packed to the rafters from five onwards..

The Blue Boar in Billericay can be a bore these days but still do a selection of 4-5 real ales. Ivory Peg in Chelmsford is better for drinking but service is a bit poor there. Would not go in the Loon on the Square in Basildump without a knuckle duster. Roebuck in Rayleigh is nice though.

Got a meet somewhere on that line next week and
was thinking of Billericay High Street but if the
Roebuck suits, then happy to go there.

It's no more than ten minutes en pied Don. It is up a steep windy hill from the station up to the high street, then turn right and it's only a minute further on. Patio area is surprisingly quite relaxing despite being exposed right next to the rammed Rayleigh High St. Is actually much bigger on the inside than it looks. Haven't been to it for a while so must put that right soon.

Chelmsford Lloyd's is quite good as well, especially in summer with the Chelmer backdrop. Peg is awful during the evenings though did meet a friend on a day off some months back late morning and it was fine.

Looking forward to the impending festival!

Yep, as Runwell says, its worth a look, if arriving by train from the London direction you should cross the footbridge and exit through the main building then right up the hill as described, 10 mins max.
Unless you fancy checking out Rayleigh Castle mound en route Laugh

There are two Gareth
The Regal, St Andrews Street, which is an old Cinema before you get to the main shopping area if coming from the station.
The Tivoli, 16 Chesterton road, bit out of the way this one but handy for Cambridge Utd if you cut across college green its a nice 10min walk, nice pub too.

Re: [garethwrexy] wetherspoon pubs [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Wetherspoons is an old style (ie: back when they were cheap and everywhere) "Little Chef" with beer.

Even down to publishing a Map so you can tick them off.

Most of them in my experience have very poor bar service (one near where I worked in Swindon used to have a staff changeover at 4PM just when the offices kicked out and many times only one member of staff on duty at that time. I more than once walked out).

Far too many outlets have pumpclips turned round to face the punters even though the beer is "off" and clueless staff that dont know this, and dont get me started on their house beer "Available Soon".

The Lloyds Number Ones are best avoided, particularly after 8PM when they go all out for the Pre-club crowd. Some others in larger towns have replaced the Park as the hangout for the local tramps and pikeys due to the cheap drink prices (Ruddles tramps delight 99p !)

The food is very good value if you stick to the basics particularly the breakfast menu.

In places where there are very few good independent pubs they are a godsend though, my local one in chippenham is actually very good and if you can avoid the 10-4 tramp and pikey crowd its a good place to have a meal and a pint before going on to the Three crowns.

In bigger towns I tend to avoid them, places like Shrewsbury and Brighton are full of truly excellent pubs and the 'spoons really only a useful way to get a cheap mid-crawl meal. I notice a number of people on here going to places that are full of superb independent pubs and only visiting the 'Spoons, and I despair, but I am writing them to beg they open one in Calne!!

I have been to five GBG pubs in Cambridge, all of which are much nearer the Station, and I think one of the football grounds, than the nearest 'Spoons.....Two of these were quite excellent, the Elm Tree being my favourite.

Worst Spoons visited: Telford : had one beer on other than Ruddles at midday on a weekday and was a mess inside, full of chavs and pissheads (mind, so was the rest of Telford), the one nearest the station in Swindon is also awful , the "Groves Company". keep walking and a few yards further on is the "Daniel Gooch" which is much better. the one in the Town Centre in Taunton...had a wide variety of "Available Soon" and "Pumpclip not turned round" with staff constantly going to those pumps thus causing a big queue to build up. There is a newer one in Taunton thats much better but farther from the Station. "Robert Peel" in Bury...I am not kidding but EVERY time I have ordered food there theyve cocked it up.....

Oxford has had 3 Wspns for a year or 2 - as well as the 4 Candles (less bad than it was as a Yates) and the Wm Morris, there's now one called the Swan & Castle near the Westgate Centre and the Malmaison Hotel (old prison). Has a very similar atmosphere to the bar of a Dover-Calais ferry. If you drink enough, the floor moves in a similar way too. If you like your ale and find yourself in Oxford, search out the Royal Blenheim, a street further along.

Stayed at The Catherine Wheel in Henley on Thames for two nights in September 2010 when attending the North Berkshire Hop.
Quite reasonable though the entertainment was a bit noisy on the Saturday night it being a Lloyds.

Good news on Abingdon Andy.
Just a note that the Claude De Vall in Camberley is temporarily closed for safety reasons after the adjacent Yates Pub was gutted out by fire last week, needless to say the Yates pub is also closed whilst further along the High street Que Pasa is also closed due to having the Alcohol License removed Shocked

The other day I asked a friend from Stourbridge if he'd been to the new spoons yet. I could hardly believe it when he told me it had been open since spring 2010! Crazy how time flies.

Thanks, might give that a try!

I prefer the 'traditional' Moon & Bell to the 'Lloyds No.1' Amber Rooms although the latter is a lot better than a lot of Lloyds ones I've been to (though the less said about the karaoke night the better!)

The Moon & Bell is superb although it is smaller than the other spoons and therefore often packed and hard to get a table. Looking forward to returning in October although I will miss the Sheffield spoons Smile

I certainly will. These ladies are not your usual east end 'swift one after a couple of G&T's.' I'm not saying there aren't those among the throng that don't fit that description but most don't.

I've had quite a lot to drink and am currently listening to early Billy bragg. The stuff he did before he went all 'girly'. But I really don't remember any talk about me sharing a bed with Fletch. Unsure

I have yet to familiarise myself with any of the Sheffield spoons, how many is it you have again? And which is the best one?

Each to their own but never got the 'Spoons' thingy.....

Surely as a chain, most are the same no?

The few I have frequented appear to full of professional
piss-heads and women for whom the 20 foot barge pole was made.

Hamilton Hall of course is an entirely different prospect...might
have a little wander up there once the weather warms up and
the skirts get shorter...Tongue

No, not at all, each Wetherspoons is quite different, I like the fact they use old buildings and show the history and old photographs on the walls. Not to mention the range of different beers.

Yes you can get bad pubs (Hamilton Hall!) but generally they are most acceptable Wink

New Spoons visited in Melksham today. Handy for those wanting to pay a last visit to the Conigre in its final season...

Unusually it was a pub before, an average one, and is now a Spoons so thats some improvement in the town which is full of very average Waddies joints.

New one in Crouch End Broadway, The Devonshire House, visited today, and full marks for this lovely pub and the excellent Lamb Rogan Josh curry and Thornbridge Jaipur ale, one of the best ales around in my opinion Tongue

Gateshead away. My god you were poor. The second half it looked like all your players contracts were up after that game!

Well it was a nothing game by that stage so I stayed well away from that one!

2 more Wetherspoons ticked today, Hammersmith Lloyd's bar which was excellent! They had Broadside, ESB and Hobgoblin on! I chose the latter and it was a perfectly served pint, went down a treat with my beef and ale pie Tongue
By contrast I then moved on to Fulham, and the Lloyd's bar there was rubbish, took 3 attempts to find a beer that was on!
First time I've been to the area and have to say its a dump, would describe it as a place that thinks its posh but its not
