Well seeing as I'm about to be dragged around Meadowhell in about twenty minutes, I'm going to waste my guess early-doors. I'm torn between two Scottish referees, both with distinctive names (one seasonal, one ironic), so I'm going to go with the ironic one...

G: Charlie Faultless - which was a name that used to be bandied around as a kid when we'd been pretty evidently bad, but denied wrongdoing ("Hey, hark at Charlie Faultless here!")

Dead referees aren't my speciality subject, so, as usual, I'll go for a geographical narrowing down...

Q. Scottish?

Jamesie is the WINNER!! AGAIN!!!!

Yes, it's the splendidly named Charlie Faultless, Scottish referee and officiator of the highest scoring World cup finals game, Austria 7-5 Switzerland in 1954. But his name is the reason I chose him.

Can't find out much about him but he was also in charge of the 1955 Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Clyde, which Clyde won 1-0 in a replay. He was also said to have been quite a character as well as being a top class ref, and the Glasgow referees association has named one of its annual trophies in his name.

I think Lars may have got this ("sounding like Basil Fawlty"??) but he'd used his guess for today and was otherwise pre-occupied searching Wikipedia for rude English words...Blush

So, over to you Jamesie...

It figures! I found this name early morning but didn't have the confidence to submit it before asking a narrow down question. Then Jamesie, in rush because he had to go shopping with mrs. Jamesie, submits it. This ... well person... laughs his head off for three days because of me and then beats me because my confidence is broken. You ought to pay 2/3 of my therapy bill, Jamesie!

On the other hand who is sitting in front of his computer in his office, coffee and biscuits within reach and who is being run ragged in shopping hell Wink?
