Today in the automobile we had the delights of the Who, Quadrophenia and then on the way back from the fitba, the totally underrated, but excellent, Like you do - The Lightning Seeds.

Re: [Darren Lovell] Musical Snapshot [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Overloaded with work so no footy for me today, but without the phone going every 5 minutes I can listen to something decent without interruptions.

Just discovered Charlotte Hatherley's 3 solo albums (ex Ash) and having plaed all 3 about 10 times each now they are little works of art, absolutely stunning.

If you're looking for Ash-esque stuff you'll be a bit disappointed, but there's a massive range of influences in her work (the fact that she works with XTC's Andy Partidge on one track of her latest effort "New Worlds" tells a lot).

She has a fine ear for a tune, does a wonderful line in chord/key changes and some of the best harmonies since the Beach Boys - listen to the middle 8 on Grey Will Fade (title track on the first album) and wait for your spine to tingle, it's beautiful stuff.

None of the CDs hit you instantly, you have to give them a few listens to really pick out the hooks, there's such depth musically, to what she does.

Other stuff I've dug out recently and rediscovered after years of neglect include:

Roxy Music - Standed/Country Life
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside - well worth a listen if you've only ever heard the singles
Blur - Modern Life is Rubbish - maybe it is, but this is still their best work in my eyes

and finally, re-issued and not before time:

The Farmer's Boys - Get Out and Walk - cheesy as hell in some respects and aged terribly, but some brilliant tunes in amongst the drum machine, ironing board and casio keyboards Laugh

The Black Keys-Tighten Up.
From their forthcoming album released in May.
Some are saying they've gone mainstream.
And its not as raw and heavy as they are Known for.
That could be true,it certainly is a smoother Soul sound.
But its still one of the best tunes i've heard this week.
And dig Frank the dinosaur.

Been keeping it to yourselves have you.

The Parlor Mob-Hard Times.

The Parlor Mob-Bullet.

Someone's been listening to Led Zep.
If you're one of those who are saying,
"Oh no not them dinosaurs".
They sound like Zep,but different.
The singer sounds a bit like Robert Plant.

The Members - G.L.C.

They're touring again and have their first home-town gig in 30 years on May 28th. I'm well looking forward to it even though it may not be their full line-up. Hopefully one or two of the absent members will make this one.

Re: [UKPunk] Musical Snapshot [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

This week i have been mostly checkin up on Modern Blues
influenced Music,a la Black Keys,The Parlor Mob etc.
And its took me to Punk Blues.
Now when Punk came out,it was too late i'd already turned
hippy. And it was only after Punk had passed its peak, that i
realised that some of this sh*t that these spotty oiks was
playing was quite ok really.
And i can now see that some punk music had tones of my
favourite type of music "The Blues" in them.
Now remember this is the modern version of Punk.
And its that song again.
The Immortal Lee County Killers-Rollin' Stone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Svlg8Hp3Jyc

Some of you might not have the stomach for 10 minutes
of that mind blowing experience, but if you not brave enough.
Here's a shorter song from the same band.
The Immortal Lee County Killers-Lets get killed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX5X1HicLLk

And i don't know what they're being fed in Coventry nowadays.
But this is scary and i bloody like it.
Charles Dexter Ward and the Imagineers-The Ghost of Charles Dexter Ward.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ7EdpUqj3k

I'm not sure you can class the last as Punk.Slight tones of Lord Sutch!??

A night listening to some relaxing Hardcore/grunge melodic ditties whilsy working on next Saturday's programme:

So far since tea

Screeching Weasel - Boogada Boogada Boogada, their best work.
Hard Ons - Dick Cheese. One of the 1st bands I ever saw live,
Fearless Iranians From Hell - Die For Allah.
Art Phag - Gods of Grunge. One of the first ever grunge lp's from the mid 80's.

Coming up soon:

Stupids - Peruvian Vacation

I love that song too, a shame it was their only hit.
Back in 1990 I met a groundhopper from Brighton who new the ex-lead singer of the Mobiles.
