Gothenburg Giant Neale Cooper has died in hospital in Aberdeen, aged 54. He had been found badly injured in the stairwell of a block of flats in Aberdeen.

Cooper was born in Darjeeling, India, where his father managed a tea plantation. He played 132 times for Aberdeen between 1979 and 1986. At Aberdeen, under manager Alex Ferguson, he won two Premier Division championships, four Scottish Cups, one League Cup, the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup.

He went to Aston Villa from Aberdeen and later played for Rangers, Reading, Dunfermline and Ross County. He managed Ross County, Hartlepool (twice), Gillingham, and Peterhead
